Why Your Hair Hates Florida (And What Actually Helps)

Hi, I'm Victoria, and I've been doing hair here at James Geidner's studio in Vero Beach for years now. At least once a week, someone sits in my chair and says almost the exact same thing: "My hair was completely fine until I moved here."I always know what's coming next. They're going to tell me about how their hair looked great back in Ohio or New York or wherever they came from. Now it's frizzy, or flat, or doing something completely different than it used to do. And they're frustrated because nothing they try seems to work. The thing is, Florida hair is its own beast. The combination of humidity, salt air, and intense sun creates problems you don't deal with in other places. What worked for your hair elsewhere probably won't work here.Let me walk you through what I've learned about managing hair in this climate.

Why Florida Is So Hard on Hair

Think about what your hair deals with here. Constant humidity that makes it swell and frizz. Relentless sun that fades color and dries everything out. Salt air from the ocean that leaves it feeling rough and brittle.Your hair's outer layer is made of overlapping cells, kind of like shingles on a roof. When everything's healthy, those cells lie flat and your hair looks smooth. But when hair is dry and damaged, those cells lift up. Then the humidity gets in and makes everything puff up and frizz. So you end up with hair that's simultaneously too dry inside and absorbing too much moisture from the air. It's a mess.I had a client who moved here from Colorado last year. Her hair had always been straight and smooth. Within two months of living in Vero Beach, she came in looking defeated because her hair was frizzing out in ways she'd never experienced. The products she'd used for years suddenly weren't doing anything. That's Florida for you.

When Your Hair Gets Greasy Way Too Fast

This is such a common complaint. You wash your hair in the morning, it looks great. By afternoon it's flat and greasy at the roots. Most people's first instinct is to wash more often. That's usually what's causing the problem in the first place. When you wash your hair every day with harsh shampoo, you strip all the natural oils from your scalp. Your body freaks out and starts producing even more oil to compensate. So you end up in this cycle where you're washing constantly but your hair gets greasy faster and faster.Plus, the heat here makes you sweat more, which adds to the oily feeling. Here's what actually works. Try going an extra day between washes. I know it feels gross at first, but your scalp will eventually calm down and stop overproducing oil. Use dry shampoo at the roots to get through that transition period. And this is huge: only put conditioner on the ends of your hair. Not your roots. Conditioner is for your hair, not your scalp. When you put heavy moisturizing products near your roots, everything gets weighed down and looks greasy.I had a client who was washing her hair every single day and putting conditioner all over her head, roots included. She couldn't figure out why her hair always looked flat and oily. We switched her to washing every other day and keeping conditioner away from her scalp, and within two weeks she was texting me photos of how much better it looked.Look for lightweight shampoos with tea tree oil or rosemary. They help balance your scalp without drying it out so much that it overcompensates.

When Your Hair Is Dry and Fried

On the flip side, some people deal with hair that's constantly dry, rough, and dull. All those beach days and pool time take a toll. The sun and salt strip moisture out of your hair. If you color your hair or use heat tools a lot, that makes it even worse.First, figure out if your scalp is dry or just your hair. A dry scalp feels tight and itchy. Dry hair just looks lifeless and breaks easily. They need different approaches. For dry hair, you need to add moisture back and keep it there.Do a deep conditioning treatment once a week minimum. Look for masks with shea butter or natural oils. Leave it on for at least ten minutes, longer if you can.Use a leave-in conditioner spray on damp hair after every wash. It gives your hair a daily dose of protection without making it heavy. And always, always use a heat protectant before you blow dry or flat iron. I can't stress this enough. Heat literally damages the structure of your hair if it's not protected. That damage is cumulative, so every time you skip the heat protectant, you're making it worse.Sometimes at-home care isn't enough and you need professional treatments. Things like Olaplex actually repair the internal bonds in your hair so it can hold moisture better. I've seen dramatic differences in hair that was completely fried, after a few professional treatments.I had a client last summer who'd been at the beach constantly and her hair felt like straw. We did a series of moisture treatments and got her on the right products at home. Three months later her hair was soft again. She'd been ready to just cut it all off out of frustration.

When Your Hair Keeps Breaking

That little snapping sound when you brush your hair is the worst. It means your hair has reached its breaking point, literally.Breakage happens for a few reasons. Chemical damage from overlapping color services or bad bleach jobs. Mechanical damage from tight ponytails, rough brushing, or even sleeping on cotton pillowcases. Heat damage from styling without protection. And sometimes nutritional issues, like not getting enough biotin or iron in your diet.To stop breakage, you have to be gentler with your hair and rebuild its strength.Detangle carefully, starting at the ends and working up. Don't rip through knots. Switch to silk or satin pillowcases because they create less friction than cotton. Give your hair breaks from tight hairstyles that pull on the roots. For serious damage, professional bond-building treatments are honestly the only thing that works. They repair the broken connections inside your hair that make it fragile. I've had clients with hair so damaged I didn't think we could save it, and these treatments brought it back. There was a woman who came in a few months ago with breakage all around her hairline from wearing her hair in a tight bun every day for work. We talked about changing up her hairstyles and did some repair treatments. It took time, but her hair grew back healthier because we caught it before the damage became permanent.

When You Need Professional Help

Look, I sell products at the salon. But I'm going to be honest with you. Sometimes buying the right shampoo and conditioner at home isn't enough. If you've been struggling with the same hair problems for months and nothing you try seems to help, that's your sign that you need a professional to actually look at what's going on.I can see things you can't see. Whether your hair needs protein or moisture, which is a critical difference. What your scalp condition is really like. Whether you're dealing with damage or just the wrong products.Trying to fix your hair without knowing what the actual problem is doesn't work. You just waste money on products that aren't addressing the real issue.A proper consultation means we can build a plan that includes the right at-home products and a schedule for salon treatments that will actually deliver results. Not just guessing and hoping something works.
