One of the questions I hear almost every day behind the chair here at James Geidner Hair Studio is, "What's the real difference between balayage and traditional highlights?" It's a great question. With so many terms floating around like babylights, foilayage, and money pieces, it's easy to feel a little lost.
Last week, a woman named Patricia came in with a photo of gorgeous, sun-kissed balayage. She'd been getting traditional foil highlights for 15 years and wanted a change.
"I love this look," she said, pointing to the photo. "But I'm not sure if it'll work for me. What if I hate it?"
I looked at her current highlights. They were beautiful, bright, and perfectly placed. But she was coming in every six weeks for root touch-ups.
"Tell me about your schedule," I said. "How do you feel about coming in this often?"
She sighed. "Honestly? I'm tired of it. Between work and traveling to see my grandkids, I feel like I'm always rushing to get my roots done."
That's when I knew balayage would change her life.
As a L'Oréal Professional Master Colorist with over 40 years of experience, my goal is to clear up the confusion. It's not about which technique is "better," but which one is perfect for your hair, your lifestyle, and the look you truly want to see in the mirror. Let's talk it through, just like we would during a consultation.

What Does Balayage Actually Look Like?
Think about how the sun naturally lightens your hair after a summer spent near the water here in Vero Beach. That's the essence of balayage. The word itself is French and means "to sweep," which is exactly how we apply it.
Instead of using foils, we hand-paint the lightener directly onto the surface of your hair. This gives me incredible artistic control to place brightness exactly where it will look most natural, often framing the face and adding dimension through the ends.
Why So Many People Love Balayage
The biggest draw is the maintenance. Because the color is blended softly and doesn't start directly at the root, you avoid that harsh line as your hair grows out. Most of our balayage clients can go 12 to 16 weeks between appointments, making it a perfect fit for a busy lifestyle. It's the definition of lived-in color that just gets softer and prettier over time.
We often use advanced techniques like French Balayage, a two-step process that involves a gentle lightening followed by a nourishing gloss. This tones the hair to the perfect shade and adds incredible shine, all while keeping your hair healthy.
Patricia decided to try balayage. I hand-painted dimension through her hair, focusing on face-framing pieces and keeping her roots soft and natural.
When she saw the result, she smiled. "It's different," she said. "But I like it. It looks... effortless."
Three months later, she came back for her first maintenance appointment. She was glowing.
"I haven't thought about my roots in three months," she said. "I forgot what that felt like. I'm never going back to traditional highlights."
When Are Traditional Foils Actually the Better Choice?
Foils are the classic, time-tested method for a reason. They deliver precision and power. When we use foils, we weave out small sections of hair, paint them with lightener, and wrap them in foil. The foil conducts heat, which allows for a more significant and controlled lift.
When Foils Are the Right Choice
If your goal is to be a bright, all-over blonde or to blend away grays seamlessly, foils are usually the answer. They allow us to get much closer to the scalp for a uniform look from root to tip. Foils give us that clean, high-contrast brightness that you just can't achieve with open-air painting.
The trade-off is the upkeep. Because the color goes right to the root, you'll see regrowth more quickly. Plan on visiting the salon every 6 to 8 weeks to keep your color looking fresh.
I have a client named Susan who's been getting foil highlights for 20 years. A few years ago, she asked me about switching to balayage because everyone was talking about it.
"Do you want to switch?" I asked her.
She thought about it. "I love how bright my highlights are," she admitted. "And I don't mind coming in every six weeks. It's my me-time."
"Then let's keep doing what works for you," I said.
She looked relieved. "I thought I had to change because balayage is trendy."
"Never change something that makes you happy," I told her. "Trends don't matter. What you love matters."
Susan still gets foil highlights. They're perfect for her.

What About Babylights and Modern Chunky Highlights?
The world of highlighting isn't just a choice between two techniques. There are nuanced approaches for different goals.
Babylights are micro-fine, delicate highlights that mimic the subtle, dimensional color of a child's hair. They are woven incredibly finely and placed all over to create a soft, shimmering effect. It's the perfect option if you're new to color or want a very natural, low-contrast result.
I had a client named Jennifer who'd never colored her hair. She was 45 and starting to see some gray, but she was terrified of looking "done" or fake.
"I just want to look like myself," she said. "But maybe a little brighter?"
Babylights were perfect for her. Subtle, natural, barely noticeable individually but gorgeous collectively.
When I finished, she studied herself in the mirror. "I can't tell where they are," she said. "But my hair looks so much better. How did you do that?"
That's the magic of babylights.
Modern Chunky Highlights are about creating bold, intentional panels of color. Think of a beautiful "money piece" that frames the face or thicker ribbons of color placed underneath for a peekaboo effect. It's a statement look that requires a skilled hand to look current and chic.
How Do You Actually Decide What's Right for You?
This is where a real consultation makes all the difference. As a Master Colorist, I don't have a one-size-fits-all answer. Instead, I analyze your hair's health, discuss your goals, and consider your daily life to create a custom plan.
Here's what actually matters when choosing.
If you want low-maintenance, natural-looking dimension, balayage is your best friend. It's perfect for the coastal lifestyle, looking beautiful whether you're at the office or enjoying a day at South Beach. If you want to be as blonde as possible or need gray coverage, traditional foils will give you the bright, precise result you're looking for.
If you have very dark hair and want a dramatic lift, we might use a technique called "foilayage." This combines the power of foils with the blending of balayage to achieve a bright result without sacrificing a soft grow-out. It requires a deep understanding of hair chemistry to keep your hair healthy, which is why we often use products with built-in bond protectors.
If you're nervous about color or want something very subtle, babylights are a fantastic way to dip your toes in the water.
I had a client named Marie who came in wanting to go from dark brown to blonde. She showed me a photo of platinum hair.
"Can you do this?" she asked.
"I can," I said. "But it'll take three sessions over four months to do it safely. And you'll need to come in every six weeks for maintenance. Are you ready for that commitment?"
She thought about it. "Actually, I travel a lot for work. I'm in Brazil half the year. I can't do six-week appointments."
We switched the plan to a softer balayage that she could maintain every 12 to 14 weeks. She was much happier with that approach.
The "dream" photo wasn't right for her life. But we found something better that actually worked.
Ultimately, the most important step is talking with a stylist who understands the art and science behind hair color. We can even combine techniques to create a look that is completely unique to you.
What's Your Next Step?
Choosing a highlighting technique can feel like a big decision, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. It's about starting a conversation and building a plan that makes you feel confident and beautiful.
Patricia, the client who switched from foils to balayage, recently told me something that stuck with me.
"I used to plan my life around my hair appointments," she said. "Now my hair works around my life. That's what I really needed."
That's what good color should do. Work with your life, not against it.
