Between the salt air off the beach and the Florida sun, hair takes a beating here in Vero Beach. Just this week, one of my regulars slid into my chair and sighed, “James, my ends look fried no matter what I do.” I hear it all the time, and the good news is that it’s fixable. With a few small habits, you can keep your hair looking like you just stepped out of the salon, even weeks after your appointment.
1. Wash Less Often
We all love that squeaky-clean feeling, but over-washing is one of the fastest ways to dry out your hair. Especially in our humid coastal climate, washing too often can strip away natural oils that protect your strands. I usually tell clients to aim for two to three washes a week.
Here’s what helps:
- Massage your scalp gently when you wash
- Rinse with cool water to keep your cuticle smooth
- Let your natural oils work between washes
Victoria in our studio swears this trick keeps her color vibrant for longer. If you’ve invested in color services, protecting that color is worth the small shift in routine.
2. Trim Regularly
Split ends don’t always show right away, but they quietly creep up and make hair look dull. A quick trim every 6 to 8 weeks keeps your ends clean and your shape polished without losing length. I call it a “dusting.”
Jean is great at this. She has an eye for removing just enough to keep your cut looking intentional, not choppy. Regular trims are especially important if you’re growing your hair out or prepping for a style like bridal hair, where smooth, healthy ends make a huge difference in how your style holds.
3. Shield Your Hair from Heat and Sun
That Florida sun we love so much can fade your color fast. Add in hot tools and you’ve got a recipe for dryness. Before you head out for a walk downtown or relax near Curated Living with an iced latte, give your hair some protection. Limit direct sun exposure when you can, and avoid using hot tools every single day.
When you do style with heat, keep the temperature on the lower side and make sure your hair is completely dry before you start. It only takes a few seconds of caution to save your ends from breaking down.
4. Be Gentle While You Sleep
Rough cotton pillowcases can snag your hair while you toss and turn. A smooth pillowcase lets your hair glide, cutting down on frizz and breakage. It’s a small switch that makes a huge difference, especially if you have fragile or fine hair.
If you wear your hair up to bed, keep it loose. A soft fabric tie is much kinder than a tight elastic that can crease or snap your strands overnight.
5. Keep Hair Hydrated
Healthy hair starts beneath the surface. Between the sun, salt, and that ever-present Vero Beach breeze, your hair craves moisture. Drink plenty of water and add a weekly deep conditioning treatment at home. Focus on your mid-lengths and ends, and give it time to soak in before rinsing.
Clients who add this step often notice their hair feels stronger and styles better, even on the sticky humid days when nothing wants to cooperate.

Little habits add up. These are the same tips I give clients in my chair every day at James Geidner Hair Studio.
