After forty years of doing hair here in Vero Beach, I can spot the frizz frustration before someone even sits down. They walk in with that defeated look, hair doing its own thing despite whatever they tried this morning.
Usually they say something like "I spent an hour styling my hair and it looked great until I stepped outside. Now look at it."
Welcome to Florida. The humidity here is brutal on hair, and I've had this conversation hundreds of times. People want to know if there's anything that actually works, or if they're just stuck fighting with their hair forever.
That's usually when we start talking about Brazilian Blowouts. But there's so much confusing information out there about what it is and what it does, so let me explain what I've learned from actually doing these treatments for years.
What It Actually Is
First thing people get wrong: a Brazilian Blowout is not a straightening treatment. If you want your hair straight, this isn't what you're looking for.
What it does is create a protective protein layer around each hair strand. This smooths down the cuticle, which is where all the frizz comes from. When your cuticle is rough and lifted, humidity gets in and makes everything puff up. When it's smooth and sealed, the humidity can't penetrate.
So if you have wavy hair, you'll still have waves after a Brazilian Blowout. If you have curls, you'll still have curls. The difference is they'll be smooth, defined, and not frizzing out in all directions. And it lasts about twelve weeks.
I got my Master Certification in Brazilian Blowout because I was doing so many of them and wanted to really understand the chemistry and technique behind it. We're actually the only Master Certified salon in the Vero Beach area, which just means I went through advanced training on how to apply it properly.
The certification matters because if this treatment isn't applied right, the results are inconsistent. I've seen people come in after getting one done somewhere else and it barely lasted a month because it wasn't sealed properly.
Brazilian Blowout Versus Keratin Treatment
People use these terms interchangeably, but they're completely different things.
A traditional keratin treatment is designed to straighten your hair. The keratin actually penetrates inside the hair shaft to restructure it and make it straighter. If your goal is to reduce curl and get a much straighter look, that's what you want.
The process takes about three hours, and you can't wash your hair or put it up for three days afterward. Some people don't mind that waiting period, but it's annoying if you're trying to fit it into a busy schedule.
Brazilian Blowout works on the outside of the hair instead. It coats each strand with amino acids that seal the cuticle and eliminate frizz while keeping your natural texture. It's faster, about ninety minutes, and there's no waiting period. You can wash it, style it, swim in it immediately after you leave.
So the question is what you're trying to accomplish. If you want straight hair, get a keratin treatment. If you want your natural texture but without the frizz and daily styling battle, get a Brazilian Blowout.
I had a client a few months ago who'd gotten a keratin treatment somewhere else and was upset because her curls were mostly gone. She loved her curls, she just wanted them to be manageable. We let that grow out and did a Brazilian Blowout instead, and she was so much happier. Her curls came back but they were smooth and defined instead of frizzy.
What It Costs and Whether It's Worth It
A Brazilian Blowout here runs between $270 and $400 depending on your hair length and thickness. I know that sounds like a lot upfront.
But think about what you're getting. Twelve weeks of easier hair. That's three months where you're not spending forty-five minutes fighting with a blow dryer and flat iron every morning. You roll out of bed, maybe run a brush through it, and you're done.
I've had clients tell me they're saving twenty or thirty minutes every single day on their hair routine. Over twelve weeks, that adds up to actual days of your life you're getting back.
Plus you're using heat tools way less, which means less damage long-term. Your hair stays healthier, you get fewer split ends, you need fewer cuts to deal with damaged ends.
And if you color your hair, the sealed cuticle holds the color in better. A lot of my clients find their color lasts several weeks longer after a Brazilian Blowout. So you're spacing out color appointments too.
The other thing nobody talks about is the mental relief of not worrying about the weather. You can make plans without checking if it's going to be humid. You can go to the beach, the pool, work out, whatever, and your hair still looks good.
I had a client who hadn't been to the beach in two years because she was so frustrated with what the humidity did to her hair. After her first Brazilian Blowout, she sent me a photo from the beach with the caption "I forgot what this felt like." That's worth something.
What Actually Happens During the Appointment
When you come in for a Brazilian Blowout, here's what we do.
First we talk about your hair and what you're hoping to get out of this. I need to understand your texture, your routine, what's frustrating you. Every head of hair is different, so the application gets customized.
Then I wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo. This removes any product buildup and preps the hair to actually absorb the treatment. If there's silicone or oil sitting on the hair, the treatment won't bond properly.
Next comes the application. I section your hair and apply the smoothing solution from roots to ends, making sure every strand is coated. This part takes a while because thoroughness matters.
After that, I blow dry your hair completely. Then I flat iron it in small sections. This is the step that seals the treatment onto the hair shaft. The heat bonds everything together and creates that smooth finish.
Final rinse, quick conditioning treatment, style your hair, and you're done. You walk out with the finished result. No waiting period, no restrictions. You can do whatever you want with your hair immediately.
For aftercare, you need sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Sulfates will strip the treatment and make it fade faster. I'll recommend specific products, but basically anything sulfate-free works.
Why People Come Here for It
Look, I'm not going to pretend we're the only salon in Florida that offers Brazilian Blowouts. Plenty of places do them.
But we're the only Master Certified salon in this area, which means I've been through the advanced training on the proper technique and chemistry. I've done hundreds of these treatments. I know how to customize the application for different hair types and how to troubleshoot if something isn't working right.
I've seen people come in after getting one done at a chain salon where they were rushed through in forty-five minutes and the results barely lasted a month. This isn't a service you want done quickly. You want it done correctly.
The other advantage is we've been here for decades and we know this climate. I understand what Vero Beach humidity does to hair because I live here too. I'm not following some generic protocol, I'm applying this treatment specifically for Florida weather.
Plus, and this matters, we actually care about the health of your hair. If I think a Brazilian Blowout isn't right for your hair, I'll tell you. I've turned people away when their hair was too damaged to handle the treatment safely. Better to be honest upfront than deliver bad results.
If You're Interested
Come in and let's talk about your hair. I can look at your texture, your condition, your goals, and tell you honestly whether a Brazilian Blowout makes sense for you.
Maybe it does, maybe a keratin treatment is better, maybe you just need a different haircut and better products. I'm not trying to sell you on anything specific. I'm trying to solve your frizz problem in whatever way actually works.
