Which Hair Extensions Should You Actually Get? An Honest Breakdown From 40 Years Behind the Chair

The short answer: Choose tape-in extensions if you have fine or fragile hair and want a low-damage option that lasts 6 to 8 weeks. Choose sew-in wefts if your natural hair is thick and strong and you want a longer install. Fusion bonds look the most natural and last 3 to 4 months, but only when installed by someone who knows what they're doing. The right method depends on your hair texture, scalp health, and how you care for it at home.

At James Geidner Hair Studio at 541 Beachland Boulevard in Vero Beach, this is the conversation we have with almost every extension client before we touch their hair. Not every method suits every head of hair. Fine, fragile hair around the temples can't handle the tension of a sew-in weft. Thick, strong hair can handle almost anything. Matching the method to your hair is the whole game.

James Geidner brings 46 years behind the chair and the 2021 Colorist of the Year award to every consultation. That kind of experience shows up in the small decisions: where to place a bond, how thick to make a weft, when to walk a client away from a look that will damage their hair. To see the different options we carry, our Hair Extensions collection lays them out.

Why Does the Extension Method Matter More Than the Look?

We've watched clients come in after extension work done at a discount salon out of town. Bonds placed too big, applied too close to the scalp, no aftercare instructions handed over. The matting shows up before the client even sits down. We spend months of trims and restorative treatments before we can even talk about extensions again.

That's why we don't push one method on every client. The extension type has to match your hair texture, your scalp health, and your daily routine. If it doesn't, your natural hair pays the price. Who Are Tape-In Extensions Actually For?

Tape-ins are our go-to for most first-time extension clients. They're thin wefts attached to medical-grade adhesive strips. We take small sections of your natural hair and sandwich them between two strips. The application takes about an hour.

Tape-ins lie flat against your scalp. They're comfortable, discreet, and they don't create the pulling or tension you can get with other methods. They work best on fine to medium hair, which matters here in Vero Beach where humidity and salt air already stress your strands. They last 6 to 8 weeks between reapplications, and when applied and removed correctly, they don't damage your natural hair. When Should You Choose Sew-In Wefts or Fusion Bonds Instead?

Sew-in wefts are a better choice for clients with thick, strong hair who want longevity. We braid your natural hair close to the scalp and sew the wefts into the braids. Sew-ins hold up well against Florida sun and salt air. On fine or fragile hair, they can cause breakage. That's a firm no from us if the natural hair can't support the weight.

Fusion bonds use a keratin-based adhesive to attach small strands of extension hair to your own. They look very natural and last 3 to 4 months. The tradeoff is time and technique. Application and removal both take longer, and poor technique will damage your hair. This is one of those services where the person doing the work matters more than the product itself. If you want to understand how keratin-based treatments work more broadly, our post on whether a keratin treatment is the right move for your hair is a solid read.

How Do You Care for Extensions in Vero Beach?

Extensions on the Treasure Coast need extra care. Sun, humidity, and salt air dry hair out fast. We tell every client the same things: use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners, brush gently with an extension-safe brush, and pull hair back into a loose braid before sleep or swimming.

We also lean on the K18 repair mask and L'Oreal Metal Detox to keep both your natural hair and the extension hair healthy. Metal Detox pulls copper and iron out of the hair shaft that Florida water leaves behind, which matters if you want your color and your extensions to hold. What About Extensions for Weddings and Big Events?

We install a lot of bridal extensions here. If you want fuller, longer hair on your wedding day, extensions are a great option, but timing is everything. You want them installed at least a few weeks before the event so you can wear them, wash them, and work out any adjustments. If we install extensions the morning of a wedding, we lose the ability to fix anything if a piece slips or the color reads slightly different in natural light.

If you're planning bridal or event hair, our event hair timeline for Vero Beach brides using extensions walks through the schedule week by week.
