Why Does Your Color Turn Out Perfect on Some Hair and Terrible on Yours?
Last Tuesday, a woman named Sophia walked into the salon from Indian River Shores looking frustrated. Her hair was a mess of three different colors: brown roots, orange mid-lengths, and blonde ends. She told me she’d gone to a new salon nearby and they used the same color all over. The result? A disaster.
I ran my fingers through her hair. The roots were smooth and resistant. The midshaft felt rough. The ends were dry, like straw. I told her, “Your hair has three different textures. They treated it all the same.” That’s why the color came out so uneven.
Why Does the Same Hair Color Look Different on Your Hair?
In my experience, this happens all the time here in Vero Beach. Your hair doesn’t absorb color evenly because it’s not all the same. The key is something we call porosity, the way your hair soaks up moisture or color.
Take Sophia’s roots. They were virgin hair, never colored before, healthy and smooth. That means the color had a hard time penetrating. It came out lighter than expected.
The midshaft? That part had been colored several times over the years. It was rough and porous, so the color grabbed too fast and turned orange.
The ends had been bleached six months ago. Very damaged and extra porous. The color soaked in immediately and turned almost black in some spots.
I compared it to painting three different surfaces with the same paint: wood, concrete, and sponge. You wouldn’t expect the same finish, right? Hair works the same way.
How Hair Porosity Affects Your Color
Another client from Fort Pierce, Rita, came to me after trying to color her hair at home for a year. She said, “I leave the dye on for an hour and barely see any change.”
I checked her hair. It was shiny and smooth, very low porosity. That means her hair resists absorbing color. It’s sealed tight and doesn’t let much in.
I told her, “You’re not stuck with this. We just have to work with your hair’s natural resistance.” That meant using techniques and products designed for low porosity hair so the color could truly bond.
Then there’s Monica, a regular from Sebastian. She gets color every six weeks, but by week four, it’s faded and dull.
Her hair was damaged, very porous, and breaking. I explained, “Your hair soaks up the color but can’t hold it because it’s too porous.”
In these cases, I often recommend treatments like the K18 bond repair or L’Oreal Metal Detox. These help strengthen hair and lock in color, especially in the Florida sun and salt air we deal with here on the Treasure Coast.
Why Experience Matters for Color Correction

We also use advanced systems like the Vitamino Color and Brazilian Blowout to keep color vibrant and hair healthy despite the relentless Florida humidity and sun.
What You Can Do to Keep Your Color Looking Great
First, know your hair’s porosity. It’s the biggest reason your color might turn out differently than a friend’s even if you use the same dye. Second, treat your hair with care. Avoid harsh at-home color kits that don’t account for your hair’s condition.
If you’re battling fading or uneven color, come see us. We’ll assess your hair and create a plan that respects your hair’s history and texture.
