How to Style Your Hair the Day After a Perm Without Ruining It
Last Thursday, a client named Sarah came in from Sebastian looking worried. She’d gotten a perm the day before and was already convinced she’d ruined it by touching her curls too much. I see this all the time, especially with perms here on the Treasure Coast. The Florida sun and humidity can make caring for new curls feel tricky. But here’s the thing—if you know the right steps, you can keep those curls fresh and bouncy without any stress.
Why You Need to Treat Your Perm Gently for the First 48 Hours
A perm is your hair learning a whole new shape. The bonds inside your hair need about two full days to lock that shape in. That’s why you can’t wash or soak your hair for 48 hours after the perm. If you do, those curls won’t set properly. You’ll end up with uneven waves or limp curls instead of the full, beautiful bounce you want.
I had a regular client, Lisa, who rinsed her hair the morning after her perm because she thought it would make her curls softer. Instead, one side stayed curly and the other fell flat. We had to fix it by reshaping and trimming, but it was avoidable. Waiting those two days is key, especially with the Vero Beach humidity messing with your style.
How to Style Your Hair the Day After a Perm Without Washing
So what if your curls look wild the day after your perm? You don’t have to wash to fix them. Here’s what I tell our clients at James Geidner Hair Studio:
- Keep a spray bottle with water handy. Just a light mist will reshape a curl without soaking your hair.
- Use a curl mousse or cream that’s moisturizing and lightweight. You don’t need much—just enough to bring the curls back together.
- Skip hairspray for now. Most sprays have alcohol that dries out curls, especially in Florida’s salt air and heat.
- If you want to put your hair up, use scrunchies or clips. Avoid tight elastics that leave dents in your fragile new curls.
Air Drying Is Your Best Friend
I always tell clients to avoid blow dryers right after a perm. Air drying is the safest way to protect your curls while they set. Heat can stretch the curl pattern and cause frizz before it really has a chance to form.
If you’re impatient like some of our clients here in Vero Beach, grab a microfiber towel and gently blot your hair. Don’t rub—that roughs up the hair cuticle and can cause frizz. I know the humidity here can make air drying take a bit longer, but trust me, your curls will look smoother and more defined when you let them dry naturally.
Products We Trust for Permed Hair at James Geidner Hair Studio
When styling perms at our salon on 541 Beachland Boulevard, we stick to lightweight, flexible products that hydrate and protect. A good curl mousse with moisturizing ingredients is usually enough. If your hair feels dry, a little leave-in conditioner goes a long way. I always choose products that fit each client’s lifestyle because, honestly, what works for someone who spends a lot of time in the Florida sun might not work for someone who’s mostly indoors.
James Geidner, with his 46 years of experience and the 2021 Colorist of the Year award, has taught us the importance of tailoring care to each individual. That’s why we don’t do one-size-fits-all recommendations here.
