Why Do Your Extensions Look Amazing for Two Weeks and Then Fall Apart?

The short answer: Extensions look flawless at install because your stylist blends and finishes them for you. Around week two they start to mat at the bond points because most people brush them wrong, use products that break down the tape or bond, and skip check-in visits. The fix is a loop brush used ends-up, sulfate-free and oil-free products, and a maintenance appointment every 6 to 8 weeks.

Every couple of weeks a client walks in with extensions matted at the back of the head, not sure how it got that bad. It happens more often than you would think, so let's walk through why it happens and how to keep it from happening to you.

Why do extensions look great at first and fall apart around week two?

The honest answer is maintenance. Extensions need more attention than natural hair, especially on the Treasure Coast where humidity, salt air, and sun push everything harder.

Most of the trouble starts at the bond point. Loose shed hairs get trapped there and tangle into a mat if they are not brushed out. A regular paddle brush actually makes it worse because it catches on the bonds and pushes knots up into them.

We use loop brushes on extensions. They glide through without pulling on the bonds. Just as important, do not brush top-down. Start at the ends and work your way up. That way you detangle without driving knots into the attachment points. A lot of this care plan gets set up at the consultation, which is one reason we take fifteen minutes before we touch your hair.

Once matting reaches a certain point, it takes an hour of careful detangling to save the set. If it goes further than that, the extensions have to come out. What else can cause extensions to fail before their time?

Product choice is the second big one. Tape-in extensions are sensitive to oils. If you are using coconut oil, argan oil, or a heavy leave-in with silicones near the tape line, the adhesive breaks down and the tapes start to slide down the strand within weeks.
