Root touch-up keeps single-process color or full-coverage gray-blending looking fresh between full color services. Most clients book root touch-ups every four to six weeks for full gray coverage, or every eight to twelve weeks for tonal refresh.

All three of our stylists handle root touch-ups. Many clients combine a root touch-up with a toner and a cut for a single full appointment.

What This Service Actually Includes

A root touch up is single process permanent color applied to the new growth, usually the first inch and a half from the scalp. We custom mix the formula to match the color through your mid-lengths and ends, apply it precisely to the regrowth, and process. Sometimes we add a gloss through the ends to refresh fade.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Plan on 60 to 90 minutes for a root touch up with rinse and blowdry. Most clients return every four to six weeks, with gray coverage clients on the shorter end and clients blending less obvious roots stretching to eight or more weeks. We will help you build a maintenance schedule at your first appointment.

How often do I need root touch ups?

Most clients with full coverage gray come in every four weeks. If you are blending or chasing a balayage that has grown out, you can stretch six to eight weeks or more.

Can you cover stubborn gray hair?

Stubborn gray usually responds to a longer processing time, a more pigment dense formula, and sometimes a pre-soft step. We adjust based on your hair.

What is the difference between a root touch up and all over color?

A root touch up only colors the new growth. All over color refreshes the full length, which is sometimes needed when ends have faded or you are changing shades.

Will my color look natural at the part?

Yes if it is done right. We blend the line with feathering and avoid harsh demarcations between new color and old.

Can I add a gloss to my root touch up?

We recommend it. A gloss through the ends keeps tone consistent and adds shine. It is a small upgrade with a big visual payoff.
