Why Does Your Blonde Hair Turn Orange Every Single Time?
Last Tuesday, a woman named Emily came into the salon wearing a baseball cap pulled low over her forehead. When I asked her to take it off, I saw why. Her hair was bright orange. Not a little bit orange, completely and undeniably orange.
"I tried to go blonde myself," she said, avoiding eye contact. "I used a box that said 'light ash blonde.' This is what happened."
Emily started as a dark brown, maybe a level 4. She wanted a cool blonde, around level 9. "How many boxes did you use?" I asked. "Three," she said. "I kept trying to fix it, but it just got more orange."
I see this all the time here at James Geidner Hair Studio on 541 Beachland Boulevard in Vero Beach. People with dark hair trying to go blonde at home. It rarely works, and it’s not their fault. The problem is most people don’t understand what’s really happening when you lighten hair. It’s not like painting over a wall with a lighter color. It’s chemistry.
What Actually Happens When You Lighten Hair?
Emily thought she could put light blonde dye on dark brown hair and it would turn blonde. "That makes sense, right?" she said. "Light color on dark hair equals light hair."
"It would make sense if hair was just a blank canvas," I told her. "But it’s not. Hair color is about pigment and chemistry."
When you lighten dark hair, you’re actually removing pigment. Think of your hair like layers of color molecules stacked inside: red, orange, yellow, all warm tones. Dark brown hair has all these pigments packed in.
When you lighten hair, you don’t jump straight from dark brown to blonde. You pass through every warm tone on the way:
Brown → red → orange → yellow → pale yellow → blonde.
You can’t skip the orange stage. It has to come out first.
"So my hair turned orange because...?" Emily asked.
"Because you lifted the dark brown pigment out and revealed the orange underneath," I explained. "The box dye wasn’t strong enough to lift past that. It stops at orange."
Box dyes don’t have the power to take dark hair all the way to blonde. They lift a few levels and then give up when orange shows up.
"Why doesn’t it say that on the box?" Emily wanted to know.
"Because they want to sell you the box," I said with a smile.
The Florida Sun and Your Blonde Hair
Another client, Diana, came to me a couple of months ago. She’d been blonde for years, professionally done by James Geidner himself, who’s won the 2021 Colorist of the Year award and has over 46 years of experience in hair color. Then she moved to Vero Beach and tried a new salon. "They made me brassy," she said. "I asked for cool blonde, but I ended up with yellow-orange."
Her roots were actually blonde, but the rest of her hair had that warm, brassy tint. This happens a lot here on the Treasure Coast. The Florida sun, combined with salt air and humidity, can fade cool blondes into warm, yellow-orange tones faster than anywhere else.
That’s why at James Geidner Hair Studio, we use special treatments like the L’Oreal Metal Detox and K18 treatments to protect hair from sun damage and buildup. These help keep your blonde looking fresh and cool longer.
How to Keep Blonde Hair From Turning Orange
First, it’s key to understand you can’t get a perfect blonde with box dye, especially if you’re starting dark. You need a professional colorist who knows the chemistry and has the experience to handle the process safely. James Geidner’s 46 years of expertise shine here.
Next, maintenance is crucial. Using color-safe shampoos and conditioners designed for blondes helps. Also, avoid too much sun exposure or saltwater without protection.
We recommend regular toner sessions at the salon to neutralize any unwanted warm tones. Our Vitamino Color system is great for this. If your hair feels dry or damaged, treatments like the Brazilian Blowout or K18 can restore strength.
Thinking About Going Blonde? Here’s What You Should Know
If you’re considering going from dark brown to blonde, don’t try it alone at home. It often takes multiple sessions and a delicate touch to avoid damage and get the right tone.
